چکیده
The spin-flavor structure of certain nucleon-nucleon scattering observables derived from the large Nc limit of QCD in the kinematical regime where time-dependent mean-field theory is valid is discussed. In previous work [1] this regime was taken to be where the external momentum was of order Nc which precluded the study of differential cross sections in elastic scattering. Here it is shown that the regime extends down to order N 1/2 c which includes the higher end of the elastic regime. The prediction is that in the large Nc limit, observables describable via mean-field theory are unchanged when the spin and isospin of either nucleon are both flipped. This prediction is tested for proton-proton and neutron-proton elastic scattering data and found to fail badly. We argue that this failure can be traced to a lack of a clear separation of scales between momentum of order N 1/2 c and N c when Nc is as small as three. The situation is compounded by an anomalously low particle production threshold due to approximate chiral symmetry.

We review the theory and present status of the proton spin problem with emphasis on possible gluonic and sea contributions. We discuss the possibility of a J = 1 fixed pole correction to the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule for polarized deep inelastic scattering. Fixed poles in the real part of the forward Compton scattering amplitude have the potential to induce subtraction constant corrections to sum ru...

We summarize three alternative extensions of the quark-valence picture of nucleon strangeness and spin, including (1) gluon spin in QCD, (2) Bjorken sum rule and QCD, (3) D–E meson mixing and tadpole leakage. All three approaches suggest that ∼ 40% of the nucleon’s spin (as well as its momentum) resides with quarks, but that less than 6% is due to strange quarks.

I introduce a gauge invariant decomposition of the nucleon spin into quark helicity, quark orbital, and gluon contributions. The total quark (and hence the quark orbital) contribution is shown to be measurable through virtual Compton scattering in a special kinematic region where single quark scattering dominates. This deeply-virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) has much potential to unravel the q...
